This blog is an extension of Manitoulin Living. If you have a question, it can be asked here. If you just want to talk about Manitoulin Island, this is the place to do it.
Visitors come from all over the world to witness the incredible scenery on Manitoulin Island.
Got a favourite spot? A question? This is an open forum inviting all discussion about life on Manitoulin Island.
We visited the island last summer for the first time and are coming back this year, in August. We can hardly wait. We cottage in the Mindemoya area, wondering what sites you would suggest to see, we probably missed some last year. Very friendly, clean and pleasant place to vacation to, we hope to come every year. Aubyn
Some of my favourite spots include the Mississaugi Lighthouse in Meldrum Bay, and The Cup & Saucer trail Outside Honora Bay (Just south of Little Current).

I may be relocating to Manitoulin island for potential employment. I am an advid kayaker and love the outdoors. I have lived happily in smaller norther communities such as Dryden and Red Lake in the past. How would Manitoulin compare as far as ammenities go? Is there anything I should be aware of as far as year round accomodation goes? I would like to rent to start.
Thanks for your advice! We're going to travel up to have a look around this weekend.
I think the amenities stack up fairly well. Having not lived in those communities I don't have a ideal grasp of what I'm comparing to but, I think most people are surprised at the amount of services and amenities available.
Here is a brief list of services we currently enjoy:
- We have the highest doctor/patient ratio in Ontario
- We have cell service covering most of the east end of the Island.
- We have high-speed internet covering most of the east end as well.
- Our stores (grocery, hardware etc) are fairly comprehensive and probably have most of what you would want. If you can't find it here, The town of Espanola is only one half hour away (from Little Current).
- As far as accommodation is concerned there are a lot more homes for sale then for rent but I would check the expositor newspaper for classified listings on rentals to get an idea what's available. You can go to www.manitoulin.ca for details on the paper and where it's available. I believe they have online listings as well. For the most part I would think the majority of listings are available in the major towns on the island (Little Current, Gore Bay, Mindemoya etc.).
Good Luck!

Hi! I am a senior in high school and have been spending every summer on manitoulin since I was little and I love it. I am hoping to seek employment on Manitoulin this summer, but unsure if employers accept people who aren't local. Any advice on employment would be appreciated, thank you :)
I traveled to Manitoulin last year and found the best B & B on the North Shore called Wind & Wave. Do you know of it?
ReplyDeleteThe owners mentioned that there was a hotel being built in Little Current. Has anything been started yet?
Hi Joseph:
ReplyDeleteI don't believe anything is in the works yet in respect to the hotel in Little Current.
Check back here on a regular basis and we'll keep you posted.

What a wonderful blog! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI read that a wind farm is being installed on the Island. I am interested in knowing the reactions of the people leaving in this area.
